My New Gig: Poynter's E-Media Tidbits Editor
A lot of interesting new work has come my way recently.
Along with my normal mix of editorial, writing, and consulting/training projects, I've just been awarded one new blogging gig of which I'm particularly proud. I've been named editor of the Poynter Institute's group weblog, E-Media Tidbits.
I'll be taking over this task from my friend, colleague, and fellow Boulderite Steve Outing, who's just left Poynter to pursue an exciting new entrepreneurial venture in citizen media, The Enthusiast Group. (I'll write more about this later, but rest assured this is a very cool venture well worth watching.)
Steve is a consummate editor who has managed to gracefully combine creativity, good humor, ethical grounding, and decisive guidance. I hope this job will be as easy as he made it look -- but I won't bet on that. ;-) I will do my best to continue his Tidbits vision.
If you're not familiar with Tidbits, you really should be! Here's what it's about...
In a nutshell, Tidbits covers worldwide developments in, or affecting, the evolution of the news media online. This includes business models, community, innovative interactivity and features, citizen journalism, podcasting, conferences, and much, much more.
The official Tidbits tagline is, "A group weblog by the sharpest minds in online media/journalism/publishing." They're not kidding. Over the years, Steve Outing and others at Poynter have established a distinguished cadre of 20+ keen media observers from around the world. This group currently includes:
- Alan Abbey, President/CEO, Content Enterprises (Jerusalem)
- Matthew Buckland, Publisher, Mail & Guardian Online (South Africa)
- Eva Dominguez, multimedia journalist, online content consultant and project manager (Spain)
- Steffen Fjaervik, Associate director, Norwegian Institute of Journalism
- Rich Gordon, Associate professor of journalism, Northwestern University
- Adrian Holovaty, web developer, journalist, and database guy.
- Steve Klein, Professor and Coordinator, Electronic Journalism Program, George Mason University
- Vincent Maher, Lecturer, New Media Lab, Rhodes University
- Bill Mitchell, Director of Publishing and Editor of Poynter Online
- Ernst Poulsen, Newseditor, Danish Broadcasting Cooperation
- Katja Riefler, Founder and CEO, RISolutions (Munich)
- Norbert Specker, president, CATCHUP! (Switzerland)
- Martha Stone, multimedia news author, speaker and consultant for newspapers, magazines, and online publications
- Fons Tuinstra, director and columnist, Chinabiz. Ltd
- Steve Yelvington, internet strategist for Morris DigitalWorks, the Internet division of Morris Communications
- Peter M. Zollman, Founding Principal, Classified Intelligence / AIM Group
...and I'm sure I missed a few people in this list. I'll correct any omissions later.
One person I want to be sure doesn't escape mention is Julie Moos, Managing Editor and Publications Manager for the Poynter Institute. Julie has been closely involved with Tidbits for a long, long time and is a first-class editor. She'll be handling the management of Tidbits through Mid-March, when I'll officially be taking over as editor of that blog.
Also, Steve Outing will be continuing as a Tidbits contributor -- and we're glad to still have his insight on the team.
So that's the news! I'm excited, and looking forward to this immensely.

Amy:
Congratulations! I'm a huge Poynter fan, using it to help with ideas and my newspaper writing; I also pass ideas along to our staff.
I'm looking forward to seeing (or -- as I've soon learned about being an editor/asst. editor -- "not" seeing) your stamp on the Tidbits.
Good luck!

Amy,
That is wonderful news. Congratulations. I'm sad to see that Steven is leaving, but I'm confident that he'll find success in his new venture.
And Poynter's decision to hire you shows that the powers-that-be there know what they are doing.
This is quite an honor, and it's well-deserved.

Amy, this is awesome -- very cool and I'm so happy for you! Tidbits has always been a "must read" for me, and it's obviously going to remain in good hands. Congrats!
